Intercom vs Zendesk. A fair comparison, with sources.
Two full customer service suites, compared on what buyers choose between: AI agent, inbox, help centre, channels, hosting and setup. Every detail links to the vendor's own page.
The short answer. Three lines, if you read nothing else.
- Intercom builds the inbox around its Fin AI agent, and Fin can also answer inside a Zendesk you already run.
- Zendesk is built around tickets and phone queues, with workforce management and QA add-ons, five hosting regions and 1,800+ apps.
- Both charge per seat or agent each month, plus usage for AI resolutions and calls.
Side by side. Seven areas, every cell sourced.

When each one fits better. Both are good at something.
Neither is the better tool for everyone. This is where each one is the stronger choice.
You want the AI agent and the inbox built as one product, voice or video calls and screen sharing inside the Messenger, or Fin answering on top of a Zendesk you already run.
You run a large ticket and phone operation, need workforce management and QA add-ons, want the larger app marketplace, or need hosting in the UK or Japan, or FedRAMP (LI-SaaS).
Fin vs Zendesk AI agents. Both answer first; they bill and reach differently.
Fin answers on chat, email, voice, Slack and social, and is billed per outcome with no seat. It also runs on Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshdesk. On Zendesk it answers tickets and messaging, and Zendesk stays the system of record; messaging needs Sunshine API access, included on Suite Professional and up or bought separately. Intercom states an average resolution rate of 76% across 12,000+ customers.
Zendesk's AI agents work on messaging, email and voice, in 80 languages. Every plan includes an allowance, then each automated resolution is billed. Zendesk says they can resolve up to 80% of customer interactions and, built on Forethought, can run outside Zendesk; the page does not describe that setup. Copilot, AI help for the team, is an add-on on Suite Professional and up.

Inbox and ticketing. One shared inbox, or a ticketing suite with add-ons.
One inbox holds conversations and tickets, and both come on every plan. Email, live chat, phone, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook arrive in it, with translation in 45+ languages and 450+ apps. Intercom's pages list quality checks for Fin and teammates; we found no workforce scheduling.
Ticketing is on every plan, with SLAs and multiple ticket forms on higher tiers. Email, messaging, live chat and voice come in, plus Facebook, Instagram, X and WhatsApp on Suite plans. Workforce management and quality assurance are sold as add-ons, and Zendesk lists 1,800+ apps, partners and integrations.

Help centre. Where your articles live and who reads them.
Articles sit in collections, in one or more help centres, and show inside the Messenger, where Fin answers from the public ones. Essential has a public help centre, Advanced adds private and multilingual ones, and Expert adds multibrand. Articles cannot be embedded on your own pages, though there is an API.
Suite Team has a help centre in one language. Professional adds multiple help centres, 40+ languages and community forums. Zendesk lists a knowledge builder and generative search, and its AI agents can also draw on Google Drive, Confluence and SharePoint.
Calls, screen sharing and co-browsing. Built in on one side, through apps on the other.
Intercom Phone gives local or toll-free numbers, IVR, recordings and transcripts. Voice or video calls run from a Messenger conversation, with screen sharing, billed by usage; they are not in the mobile SDKs. Co-browsing comes from third-party apps such as Cobrowse.io in the Intercom App Store.
Zendesk covers phone, voicemail and routing, with IVR and recording on higher tiers. On every Suite plan the messaging Web Widget can show a voice call button through a Talk digital line, which may need a developer; it is voice only. Video comes from marketplace apps such as SnapCall, and screen sharing and co-browsing from apps such as Cobrowse.io.

Hosting and security. Three regions or five, and what the AI providers may do.
New workspaces on Advanced and Expert can be hosted in the US, the EU or Australia, on a contract; an existing workspace cannot be moved directly. Intercom lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27018, 27701 and 42001, and HIPAA, and says third-party AI providers are contractually barred from training on customer data.
The Data Center Location add-on covers the US, EEA, UK, Japan or Australia. Zendesk's help article says it is included on Suite Professional and up and switched on by request; the pricing page lists it as a separate add-on. Zendesk lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and 42001, a HIPAA BAA and FedRAMP (LI-SaaS), and says third-party LLM providers never train on customer data.

Setup and switching. Adding the widget, and moving your history.
The Messenger goes in with a snippet, or through React, Angular, Vue, Ember, WordPress, Google Tag Manager, Shopify or Segment; EU and Australian workspaces set one extra value. A built-in Zendesk importer moves users, organisations and tickets with attachments, all at once. It does not move tags, side conversations or call recordings, and Intercom suggests it for under 150k tickets.
The messaging Web Widget goes in with a snippet, or with one click inside a Zendesk help centre, on every Suite plan. We found no importer from Intercom on Zendesk's own pages.

If you want neither. A person on the page, not a suite.
Both are full customer service suites built around an AI agent and tickets. If what you want is a person from your team answering visitors on your website, GreetDock is a different kind of tool: live chat with the visitor's page and history beside the thread, voice and video calls your team offers in the browser, and co-browsing after the visitor accepts, hosted in the EEA.
GreetDock has no AI chatbot that answers visitors, no screen sharing, no helpdesk or ticketing and no self-serve export, and visitor-started calls are still coming. The private beta is a free 30-day trial; plans are by monthly visitors after the beta.
Questions buyers ask when choosing between them.
Is Intercom or Zendesk better for a small team?
It depends on where most of your work sits. If most conversations start in chat and you want an AI agent to answer first, Intercom is built around that, with Fin and the inbox in one product. If your team works mainly in tickets, email and phone queues, Zendesk is the broader suite. Both offer a 14-day trial with no card, so you can try your own conversations in each.
Can we use Intercom's Fin with Zendesk?
Yes. Intercom says Fin works with Zendesk tickets and Zendesk messaging, and Zendesk stays the system of record, so reporting stays in Zendesk. Fin on Zendesk messaging needs Sunshine API access, which Intercom says comes with Suite Professional and up or can be bought separately.
Which one can keep our data in the EU or the UK?
Both can host in Europe. Intercom offers US, EU or Australian hosting for new workspaces on Advanced and Expert, on a contract, and an existing workspace cannot be moved directly. Zendesk offers the US, EEA, UK, Japan or Australia, included on Suite Professional and up once Zendesk switches it on.
How do Intercom and Zendesk charge?
Both charge per seat or agent each month, plus usage. Intercom bills Fin per outcome, and phone, SMS and WhatsApp as you go. Zendesk includes an AI agent allowance and bills automated resolutions and voice above it. We do not quote prices here; both publish them on their pricing pages.
Does either one include co-browsing?
Both offer it through third-party apps, such as Cobrowse.io, listed in the Intercom App Store and the Zendesk Marketplace. Screen sharing differs: Intercom has it inside Messenger calls, and Zendesk through marketplace apps.
Can we move from Zendesk to Intercom?
Intercom has a built-in Zendesk importer for users, organisations and tickets with their attachments. It does not move tags, side conversations or call recordings, it imports everything at once, and Intercom suggests it for moves of under 150k tickets.
Who wrote this comparison?
GreetDock, which makes a different kind of tool and has no partnership with either company. We checked every detail on 16 October 2026 against Intercom's and Zendesk's own public pages, and each one links to its source.
